What Happened to All of Our Cap Space?
March 1, 2008 7:11 am - No LimitIn late December, AskTheCommish.com published an article that stated the Steelers were projected at $18.61 million under the salary cap with 43 players under contract. The other night on the NFL Network, the Steelers were listed as having about $2 million of salary cap space.
Needless to say, this caught the Steeler Nation off-guard and I've received more than a few questions the past couple of days asking "What Happened to All of Our Cap Space?" In this article, we will attempt to reconcile that figure.
The AskTheCommish numbers were based on the following assumptions:
2008 Salary Cap and Roster Analysis
February 17, 2008 6:47 pm - No LimitAs we finally come down from our high celebrating the perfect end to the Patriots 2007 season, it's time for the Burgh Sports Guys to take our annual "pre-season" look at the Steelers salary cap and roster situation. We recently published an updated look at the 2008 salaries and cap hits, and that data will form the basis for the following analysis.
Unfortunately, the exercise becomes more and more difficult each year as the data on contracts becomes increasingly difficult to track down. Luckily, there are still some good sources out there such as the NFLPA salaries database, the USA Today contract database, and some internet "insiders" (such as AdamJT13 on KFFL) that can get their hands on quality data.
2008 Updated Salary Cap
February 7, 2008 8:04 pm - No LimitUpdated - February 29, 2008
Quick Note: Updated for the restricted free agency tenders and the adjustment to the Steelers salary cap for 2007 NLTBE incentives. The 2008 NFL salary cap is $116,729,000. The Steelers have a negative adjustment of (1,910,774) for a total cap $114,818,226.
The following are estimates for the Steelers Salaries and Cap Hits for 2008. As always, the following should only be viewed as best estimates based on available data. As we've stated in the past, some of the data is very difficult to obtain, if not impossible.
2007 Salary Cap
May 15, 2007 12:00 am - No LimitNotes
Below are the 2007 salary cap estimates for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Data on workout bonuses and incentives may not be fully recognized due to lack of available data. The 2007 Cap Hit reflects the salary, roster bonuses, and estimated LTBE incentive amounts.
The "Cut Pre 6/1" and "Cut Post 6/1" columns are the amounts that an individual player would count against the cap if he were to be cut from the roster. In order to calculate cap savings, take the "Cap Hit" minus the "Cut Pre 6/1" columns. For instance, Ryan Clark has a cap hit of 1,912,500 if he's on the roster. If cut pre 6/1, his cap hit will be $1,237,500 for a savings of $675,000; if cut post 6/1, his cap hit is $412,500 for a savings of $1,500,000.
We Will: Take 2007
April 1, 2007 12:00 am - Steeltown MikeAt least that's what it feels like.
Experts, pundits, fans - everyone - seems to expect nothing but the worst for the Pirates in 2007. It's so bad, that there are some who have already pencilled the franchise in for at least 17 consecutive losing seasons, making them the new historical benchmark for futility.
Taking it one year at a time, however, do those experts, pundits and fans have good cause to expect the same from the black and gold?
2007 Salary Cap and Roster Analysis - Steelers Poised to Make Another Run
February 3, 2007 1:32 pm - No LimitAs the beginning of the 2007 season approaches, we’re coming back from the dead! The Burgh Sports Guys have been your source for Steelers salary cap analysis for the past 5 years, and we’re ready to kick off 2007. We apologize for our lackluster effort in 2006; unfortunately, our season was about as productive as the defending champs. Here’s to a renewed commitment in the coming year…
Already there’s been a lot of excitement this off-season around the offices at Heinz Field. Dick Hoak’s resignation – who saw that coming? Seriously though, the change at the top has definitely made for one of the more interesting off-seasons in quite some time. Has anyone told the local writers that the Steelers interviewed some external candidates? My sources tell me the answer to that one is a resounding no.
I'm Bill Cowher and I'm a Bully
November 8, 2006 8:14 pm - No LimitMy name is Bill Cowher, and I'm a hypocritical, hardheaded, stubborn dictator. This Sunday I will bench Ike Taylor because I can. I will refuse to bench other underperforming veterans because they are "my guys." I love to play favorites, and Ike has never been a one of those guys. Ike has always been in my doghouse, and this week I'm tying him to the tree.
You may think I have the ability to change, because sometimes I will trick you, but I'll never really change. First and foremost, this is my team and these are my rules. I WILL play favorites. Deal with it. Deshea is a Bill Cowher guy. Before Deshea was a Cowher guy, Dewayne Washington was my guy. I waited too long to bench DW because Deshea wasn't ready - actually he was ready, but I wasn't ready to change. I'm Bill Cowher and I'm a bully.
This Isn't What We Meant
October 31, 2006 6:29 am - No LimitMany of us have always said that we’d be willing to endure a few losing seasons in order to win the big one. Apparently, the football gods are going to put us to the test right out of the gate. Honestly, if that’s what happens, I’m fine with it. Nothing is better than winning it all… not six straight years in the playoffs, not four AFC Championship game appearances in eight years… NOTHING.
But let’s not get crazy. We should still expect the team to play to their best every week. We should still expect our coaches to prepare the team and keep the team focused. We should still expect this team to beat the worst team in the NFL. Maybe you’re willing to give them free reign to take a dump in your living room every Sunday, but I’m not. It’s one thing to open the year 2-5 with a bunch of hard-working schlubs that barely have the talent to win 2 games. It’s another thing when you return 90% of a Super Bowl roster with expectations of repeating.
I'm Not Proud of This Team
October 28, 2006 10:48 am - No LimitNot that anyone should be proud of what they've seen so far this season. But then again, I'm not the head coach, so my opinion doesn't really count for all that much and he "couldn't be more proud of the group of guys."
What exactly is there to be proud of? Another catastrophic special teams blunder that turned into an automatic 7? Another ridiculous celebration penalty a month after Coach Cowher proclaimed "That's on me. Trust me, that will not happen again" after two similar instances against the Bengals? Or should we be proud of Cowher's idiotic use of a challenge on a clear TD? Nah, you won't need those timeouts later.
Just Like Old Times
October 16, 2006 7:50 pm - No LimitNow that was a weekend of football reminiscent of the 2005 winter run put together by the eventual Super Bowl Champs. Not only did the good guys win, the the bad guys helped out by coming back to the back. Whether it's Greg Wesley holding Dan Campbell in the end zone, or a booth review crushing the Bengals, sometimes things just fall into place.
What a "re-birth" for the team leaders... Ben, Hines, Troy, and Farrior were all lights out this week. Before Sunday, I can't remember a single play this year where Farrior had a major impact, but he was all over the field. Troy, welcome back, we need you. Badly.
